The John Dramani Mahama-led administration has earmarked GH¢7.8 million to fund free tertiary education for persons with disabilities (PWDs) across Ghana, a bold move aimed at eliminating financial barriers to higher education for this marginalized group.
The initiative reaffirms the government’s commitment to inclusive education and equal opportunity for all, regardless of physical or mental ability.
A committee, chaired by Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, has been established to design a detailed roadmap for the rollout of the program, which is expected to benefit thousands of students with disabilities.
"This is a historic step toward ensuring that no Ghanaian is left behind due to disability or financial limitations," Dr. Apaak said.
The intervention covers tuition and related academic fees and forms part of broader social support strategies under President Mahama’s second term.
Stakeholders in the disability and education sectors have praised the policy, calling it a game-changer for accessibility and empowerment in Ghana’s education system.
