Parliament’s Appointments Committee will today, June 16, 2025, begin the vetting of seven Supreme Court nominees appointed by President John Dramani Mahama. The exercise, which runs until Wednesday, June 18, is to assess the qualifications, experience, and judicial philosophies of the nominees for the nation’s highest court.
The vetting follows a formal referral by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, to the Committee during proceedings on May 27, 2025. Speaker Bagbin further directed the leadership of the Judiciary Committee and the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee to support the process.
The nominees, who were recommended by the President on April 29, include:
Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei
Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh
Justice Senyo Dzamefe
Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo
Justice Philip Bright Mensah
Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo
Justice Hafisata Amaleboba
While the nominations have sparked criticism particularly from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), which claims the appointments are part of a “third-term political agenda”, the Committee is expected to complete its work and submit a report before Parliament goes on recess.
The outcome of the vetting will determine whether the nominees secure approval to join the Supreme Court bench.
