To strengthen Ghana’s fight against the rising number of Mpox cases, the World Health Organization (WHO) has donated vital PCR testing reagents to enhance the country’s diagnostic efforts. The handover took place at the National Public Health Reference Laboratory, where the Ghana Health Service (GHS) received the supplies.
Acting Deputy Director-General of the GHS, Dr. Caroline Reindorf Amissah, expressed appreciation for the WHO’s continued technical and logistical support.
“We are grateful to the WHO for this timely support,” she said.
“We promise from our end to play our part — to collaborate, conduct surveillance, and actively search for cases to ensure this outbreak is brought under control.”
WHO Country Representative to Ghana, Dr. Fiona Braka, emphasized the significance of the support in ensuring rapid diagnosis and response.
“These reagents will significantly enhance the country’s capacity to respond effectively to Mpox outbreaks”,she noted.
The donation includes PCR test kits capable of analyzing 3,400 suspected Mpox samples. In addition, clade-specific testing kits were provided to help determine the genetic lineage of up to 625 confirmed positive cases.
WHO and the Ghana Health Service will continue to collaborate on strengthening disease surveillance, diagnosis, and response systems to prevent further spread of the virus.
