President John Dramani Mahama has removed the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkonoo, from office with immediate effect.
A statement issued by the Presidency on Monday, September 1, 2025, and signed by the Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said the decision was in line with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution.
The removal follows the submission of a report by a Committee established under Article 146(6) to investigate a petition filed by a Ghanaian citizen, Mr. Daniel Ofori.
According to the statement, the Committee, after a thorough inquiry into the petition and evidence presented, found that Justice Torkonoo had engaged in acts amounting to stated misbehaviour under Article 146(1). The Committee therefore recommended her removal from office.
By constitutional mandate, the President is obliged to act in accordance with the recommendation of the Committee.
Justice Torkonoo’s removal marks a significant development within Ghana’s judicial system, as she becomes one of the few Chief Justices in the country’s history to be dismissed while in office.
The Presidency assured the public that due process was strictly followed in line with constitutional provisions.
