The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed a recent surge in COVID-19 cases at the University of Ghana, prompting renewed calls for adherence to preventive protocols. This comes despite COVID-19 no longer being classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
In a press release issued on June 26, 2025, GHS indicated that although the nation has seen a steady decline in cases for over a year, the latest spike at the University of Ghana requires swift intervention. The cases detected so far are reported to be mild, with no hospital admissions, but authorities warn that vigilance is needed.
GHS is working closely with the university’s management to contain the outbreak and review measures as the situation evolves. Surveillance efforts continue nationwide through collaboration with the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR).
The public has been reminded to strictly observe COVID-19 prevention protocols. These include maintaining social distancing, wearing face masks, especially in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas, frequent handwashing or use of hand sanitizer, avoiding large gatherings, staying at home when unwell, and seeking prompt medical attention if symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, general weakness, shortness of breath, or loss of taste or smell occur.
GHS assured the public that it remains committed to safeguarding public health and will provide updates as necessary.
