Former Assin Central MP and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, is set to officially file his nomination for the party’s 2026 presidential primaries on Monday, August 27, at the NPP headquarters in Accra.
The confirmation came from Stephen Amoah, MP for Nhyiaeso and a key member of Agyapong’s campaign team, who stated that the former lawmaker will personally lead his delegation to submit the required documents.
Mr. Agyapong was the first aspirant to pick up nomination forms for the upcoming January 31, 2026 primaries, after a group of NPP MPs including Kwaku Kwarteng (Obuasi West), Charles Forson (Tema West), Stephen Amoah (Nhyiaeso), and Lawrence Agyinsam (Hemang Lower Denkyira) picked up the forms on his behalf on August 5.
Agyapong enters the race as one of the frontrunners, having placed second to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the party's 2024 flagbearer contest, where he gained significant grassroots and parliamentary support.
His decision to run again is seen by analysts as a move to consolidate his political influence and reassert his vision for the party's direction, focusing on anti-corruption, industrial growth, and economic independence.
The NPP is expected to see a competitive field of aspirants as it prepares for a transition beyond President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration in the 2028 general elections.
