Dr. Emmanuel Appoh Mensah, a former parliamentary aspirant for the Gomoa East Constituency has praised President John Dramani Mahama for his bold decision to scrap fuel allowances and allocations for all political appointees. He described the move as timely and commendable, especially at a time when the country is facing economic challenges and demands for prudent public spending.
The former aspirant, speaking in an interview with Best News Ghana, said the president's directive would help save the nation significant resources, which could be redirected to support critical social intervention programs such as education, healthcare, and youth employment.
“I believe this is a great example of leadership by sacrifice,” he said. “Ghanaians are going through tough times, and the President’s decision shows sensitivity to the plight of ordinary citizens. The monies saved can be channeled into areas that directly improve the lives of the people.”
President Mahama, in a statement issued by the Presidency on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, announced the immediate cancellation of fuel allowances and allocations to all government appointees. The directive, according to the statement, is part of broader cost-cutting measures aimed at reducing government expenditure and redirecting funds to priority sectors of the economy.
The move has sparked a mix of reactions across the country, with civil society groups, political watchers, and ordinary citizens weighing in on its potential impact. While some critics argue that the gesture is symbolic and may not lead to significant savings, many others, like the former Gomoa East aspirant, view it as a step in the right direction toward restoring public confidence in leadership.
The former aspirant also urged other arms of government, including Parliament and the Judiciary, to consider similar measures in support of national austerity efforts.
“This is not the time for comfort and luxury in public service,” he added. “It is a time to show real patriotism and prioritize the needs of the masses.”
President Mahama’s announcement marks a significant policy shift and sets a tone for what many believe could become a new standard of responsible governance in Ghana.
