The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Ablekuma North constituency, Nana Akua Afriyie, has accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of deliberately deploying thugs and macho men to disrupt the ongoing parliamentary rerun.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, July 11, 2025, Akua Afriyie alleged that the NDC's actions have created an atmosphere of fear and intimidation, leading to significantly low voter turnout across all nineteen polling stations.

“There is a clear and deliberate effort by the NDC to disrupt this process. They’ve brought in hoodlums, thugs, and macho men who are intimidating voters and election officials. This is not democracy,” she said.

The parliamentary candidate further expressed concern that the violence may escalate during the counting process and called for the urgent deployment of military personnel to safeguard the electoral process and prevent potential ballot box snatching.

“We have intelligence that the NDC plans to snatch ballot boxes and cause chaos during vote counting. I am calling on the authorities to deploy the military immediately to protect voters, officials, and the sanctity of the ballots,” she stated.

The Ablekuma North rerun, which involves 19 polling stations, was ordered by the Electoral Commission to resolve disputes arising from the December 2024 general elections. However, the exercise has been marred by violence, with reports of attacks on journalists, political figures, and party agents.

Akua Afriyie’s call for military intervention comes amid growing tensions and heightened political rhetoric, as the outcome of the rerun could be decisive in determining the final parliamentary composition.
