ECG Disconnects Ghana Water Over GHS 1 Billion Debt in Revenue Mobilisation Drive

By Joylinda Laryea / June 17, 2025

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has disconnected Ghana Water Limited from the national power grid over a staggering debt of GHS 1 billion. This bold move comes as part of ECG’s ongoing nationwide revenue mobilisation exercise which began on Monday, June 16, 2025.

The exercise, expected to run until Friday, June 27, targets all categories of customers residential, commercial, industrial, and government institutions who are in arrears. According to ECG, special task forces have been deployed to enforce payment compliance and to apprehend individuals who attempt to interfere with the process or illegally reconnect power after disconnection.

ECG’s decision to go after Ghana Water sends a strong signal of its intent to clamp down on all defaulters, regardless of status or size. The disconnection is expected to spark public discourse, particularly given the essential nature of Ghana Water’s services.

Customers with unpaid bills have been strongly urged to settle their debts immediately using regular payment platforms such as the ECG Mobile App, in order to avoid disconnection and additional reconnection fees.

With this assertive campaign, ECG aims to recover massive outstanding debts and improve its financial health, ensuring better service delivery to the Ghanaian public.
