University and College Teachers Threaten Strike

By Best News Multimedia | June 9, 2025 Three major unions representing tertiary education teachers in Ghana, University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), and Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) have jointly issued a stern warning to the government over what they describe as an "undue delay" in releasing the exchange rate and payment for the 2025 Book and Research (BRA) Allowance. In a strongly worded press release dated June 9, 2025, the unions expressed deep frustration and discontent with the prolonged silence and inaction regarding the allowance, which they insist is a statutory entitlement under their Conditions of Service. The three unions held a joint meeting on June 8, 2025, during which they unanimously resolved that the government must, as a matter of urgency, release the applicable exchange rate and begin payments immediately. While accepting the late release of the rates, they firmly rejected any payment extensions beyond September 2025. According to UTAG National President, Prof Mamudu A. Akudugu, the delay has caused “significant uncertainty” and impacted the academic work of members who rely on the allowance to support research and teaching. In a direct notice to the government, TUTAG President, Prof. Uriah S. Tetteh, emphasized that if payment processes are not initiated by June 13, 2025, the unions will consider this as a strike notice. A nationwide industrial action by members of UTAG, TUTAG, and CETAG will be triggered, affecting all campuses across the country. CETAG National President, Mr. Maxwell Bunu, called on the government to act swiftly to prevent disruptions to the academic calendar and to prioritize the welfare of teachers and the broader academic community. The release also listed key contacts from all three associations and was jointly signed by the respective presidents and general secretaries: Prof Eliasu Mumuni (UTAG National Secretary) Mr. Samuel Jabez Arkaifie (TUTAG General Secretary) Mr. Fidelis Kamaayi (CETAG National Secretary) The unions are calling for immediate and decisive action from the government to avoid nationwide academic disruptions and restore confidence in the system’s commitment to higher education and research.
