The Progressive Alliance for Ghana (PAG) has issued a strongly worded statement condemning the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Government of Ghana over what it describes as “gross neglect” of qualified teachers who have gone unpaid for ten months.
In a press release dated June 30, 2025, PAG expressed deep concern over the plight of these teachers, many of whom are stationed in deprived and rural communities, working under difficult conditions to educate Ghana’s future leaders. The delay in salary payments, the party argued, not only undermines the morale and livelihoods of these educators but also jeopardizes the quality of education in underserved areas.
“This is not just about unpaid wages , it’s about disrespecting those who sacrifice to build the nation’s future,” said Donald Dzameshie, a Communication Team Member of PAG and 2024 parliamentary candidate for Akatsi South, who signed the release.
Adding to the controversy, PAG decried what it described as “harsh and inhumane” treatment of some of the affected teachers by police officers, who allegedly drove them away from the premises of the Ghana Education Service while they were peacefully protesting. The party called this a violation of their constitutional right to protest and labeled the police actions as part of a “worrying trend of intolerance towards legitimate dissent.”
The statement called on President John Dramani Mahama and Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu to take urgent action to ensure immediate payment of the owed salaries and to investigate the conduct of the police officers involved.
“If Ghana is truly committed to quality education and equitable development, we must respect, empower, and support our teachers not abandon them,” the statement emphasized.
The release ended with a passionate call for justice and support for educators, warning that without urgent intervention, the future of Ghana’s children could be seriously compromised.
