The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought was commemorated at the Tamale Jubilee Park with a colourful durbar, tree-planting exercise, and an awareness march. The event, themed "Restore the Lands: Unlock the Opportunity" and "One Child, One Tree," highlighted the urgent need for land restoration and climate resilience.
Dr. Ibrahim Muntaka, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, emphasized the importance of involving children in environmental protection to instill a culture of ownership and sustainability from an early age. He also noted that human activities remain a major cause of land degradation and drought, calling for a shift in attitudes.
Director of Climate Change at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Mr. Felix Addo Okyere, underscored land restoration as critical to sustaining livelihoods, biodiversity, and food security. He stressed the need for collective responsibility in tackling environmental challenges.
The celebration ended with awards to individuals and groups recognized for their exceptional contributions to restoring degraded lands and combating climate threats.
