The Government of Ghana has officially launched the Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme in Obuasi as part of ongoing efforts to promote responsible mining and provide a structured alternative to illegal mining activities. The initiative was unveiled on 6th August 2025 by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama.

The programme will see small-scale miners organised into cooperatives, allocated specific concessions, and placed under the supervision of trained officers to ensure that mining activities are carried out sustainably. A key component of the initiative is the enforcement of mandatory land reclamation to restore degraded lands after mining operations.

Dr. Amoakohene emphasised that the programme reflects government’s determination to balance economic livelihoods with environmental protection. He issued a strong warning to those who persist in illegal mining despite the availability of this legal pathway.

“Any individual or group who refuses to take advantage of this legal pathway and chooses to engage in illegal mining will be deemed an enemy of the state and dealt with in accordance with the law,” he cautioned.

The Minister urged all stakeholders to embrace the programme, stressing that responsible mining is essential for protecting Ghana’s natural resources while creating a future of dignity and prosperity for all.
