The Member of Parliament for Zebilla, Hon. Ebenezer Ndebilla, has raised serious concerns over escalating environmental degradation in northern Ghana, calling for the immediate enactment and enforcement of bylaws to address the growing threat.

Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, the MP warned that illegal logging, rampant bushfires, and unsustainable farming practices were wreaking havoc on the region’s delicate ecosystem, contributing to worsening food insecurity and the broader impacts of climate change.

“Northern Ghana is on the frontline of the climate crisis,” Hon. Ndebilla stated. “We are witnessing an alarming rate of deforestation and land degradation that, if left unchecked, will undermine our agricultural base and the livelihoods of thousands of families.”

The legislator urged Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to collaborate with traditional leaders, environmental experts, and local communities to design and implement bylaws tailored to the region’s environmental challenges.

He also called on the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation to prioritize reforestation initiatives, as well as sustained public education campaigns on responsible land use.

“Without decisive action, our future food systems and water sources are in jeopardy,” he warned, adding that the consequences of inaction would be felt far beyond the northern regions.

Environmental advocates and community leaders in the area have echoed the MP’s call, emphasizing the need for grassroots participation and enforcement mechanisms to ensure long-term success.

Hon. Ndebilla’s passionate appeal comes as Ghana continues to grapple with the broader effects of climate change, particularly in vulnerable regions where environmental destruction directly threatens lives and livelihoods.
