Traffic came to a standstill at the Ofankor Barrier Stretch in Accra this afternoon following a heavy downpour that led to severe flooding in the area.
The sudden deluge left several vehicles and commuters stranded on both ends of the floodwaters, bringing movement along the usually busy stretch to a complete halt. Eyewitnesses reported that water levels rose quickly, submerging parts of the road and making it impassable for both private and commercial vehicles.
Many commuters were seen wading through water or seeking shelter as traffic backed up for several kilometers. Some drivers attempted to maneuver through the flood but were forced to abandon their vehicles when engines stalled midstream.
Motorists and commuters are being strongly advised to avoid the Ofankor Barrier route and use alternative roads until the water recedes and safety is assured.
Residents in the area are also calling on city authorities to urgently address the persistent drainage issues that contribute to such flooding during every major rainfall.
