The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey (GCAG) has called for immediate investigations and potential prosecution of National Democratic Congress (NDC) constituency chairmen in Axim and Dunkwa over their alleged involvement in illegal mining activities.
In a strongly worded statement released on Wednesday, the Coalition urged the relevant state authorities, including the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the Ghana Police Service, to take swift action to uphold accountability and ensure justice is served.
According to the GCAG, credible reports and community testimonies have linked the local party executives, along with some unnamed government and local assembly officials, to illegal mining operations that have severely degraded the environment in parts of the Western and Central Regions.
“The fight against galamsey must be devoid of political protection and interference. No one is above the law, and we demand that those implicated regardless of their political affiliation are thoroughly investigated and, if found culpable, prosecuted accordingly,” the Coalition stated.
The allegations have sparked public interest, with growing pressure on anti-corruption and environmental agencies to act decisively. Meanwhile, the NDC is yet to issue an official response to the claims.
The GCAG has vowed to continue monitoring developments and collaborating with civil society partners to ensure that illegal mining is tackled without fear or favor.
