The National Communications Authority (NCA) has suspended the operations of nine radio stations across the country for various infractions, following the expiration of a 30-day grace period granted by President John Dramani Mahama to defaulting broadcasters.
The presidential directive, described as a regulatory amnesty, offered offending stations a window to rectify breaches of the laws and regulations governing FM radio broadcasting in Ghana. While many took steps to comply, the NCA said six stations “failed, refused and neglected” to take any corrective action.
The affected stations are:
1. Donplus Multimedia Limited – Ho (105.9 MHz)
2. Dreams Ghana Media Limited – New Abirem (104.9 MHz)
3. Jam Multimedia Limited – Kintampo (101.3 MHz)
4. Jewel Group Limited – Duayaw Nkwanta (102.7 MHz)
5. Kpandai Star Community Radio – Kpandai (107.3 MHz)
6. Unique Gateway Communication Limited – Nkawkaw (105.7 MHz)
In addition, three other stations were found to have failed to remedy specific breaches, including the unauthorised use of Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies and unapproved transmitter locations. These stations were also cited for operating without a Certificate of Compliance in violation of Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991).
They are:
1. Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited – Accra (95.9 MHz)
2. Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited – Kumasi (101.3 MHz)
3. Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited – Takoradi (101.3 MHz)
The NCA emphasised that it will continue to closely monitor Ghana’s broadcasting space to ensure strict adherence to the conditions of authorisation and the country’s broadcasting laws.
According to the Authority, these enforcement actions are part of efforts to sanitise the media landscape, promote fair competition, and maintain technical and content standards in the broadcasting sector.
