Mahama Urges Compassion and Integrity at National Day of Prayer

President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to choose compassion, truth, and integrity in both word and deed, urging the nation to pursue unity and healing in their daily interactions.

Speaking at the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving ceremony in Accra on Monday, Mahama emphasized the need for moral renewal and national reflection under the theme, “Reset, Reflect and Review for National Prosperity.”

He encouraged Ghanaians to see the day not only as a moment of gratitude to God but as a chance to recommit to the core values that promote peace and national cohesion.

“True thanksgiving is not just uttered with our lips — it must be evident in our lives,” he said. Quoting James 2:17, he added, “Faith by itself, if not accompanied by action, is dead.”

Mahama cautioned against divisive rhetoric, urging Ghanaians—especially public figures—to use their words to heal rather than harm. “Let us speak words that build, not break; that reconcile, not divide,” he said.

He also underscored the importance of accountability and ethical leadership, noting that genuine national transformation requires a culture of honesty and responsibility at all levels of society.

“We must be honest in our dealings, compassionate in our conduct, and upright in our service. Those in authority, including myself, must be held to the highest standards of integrity and humility,” he said.

“Even the office of the president, which I have once held, is not above the law,” Mahama added. “Leadership must be anchored in justice, humility, and reverence for God,”he added. 

The solemn event brought together religious leaders, government officials, and citizens from across Ghana, providing a platform for collective prayer, spiritual renewal, and a reaffirmation of the nation's shared values.
