Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed Ghana’s strong commitment to combating drug abuse and illicit trafficking, describing it as a critical national priority that requires a comprehensive and compassionate approach.
In a powerful message shared on her official page to mark the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Vice President emphasized that drug abuse poses a grave threat to public health, safety, and national development.
Speaking on this year’s global theme, “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention,” she called for deeper investments in preventative strategies, stressing the need to tackle the root causes of drug abuse before they manifest into crises.
She commended the Narcotics Control Commission for its sustained operations, including the recent destruction of over 16 metric tons of seized narcotics. “Each gram destroyed is potentially a life saved,” she noted, applauding the commission's vigilance.
The Vice President also welcomed the directive from the Minister for the Interior to operationalize the Substance Use Disorder Rehabilitation Fund, stressing the importance of providing rehabilitative care to help individuals recover and reintegrate into society.
She warned of the rising dangers of synthetic opioids and highlighted the growing links between drug trafficking, wildlife crimes, environmental degradation, and the exploitation of vulnerable communities.
“We must treat this fight not just as a law enforcement matter but as a shared national responsibility,” she stated. “If we are to build a resilient and prosperous Ghana, we must combine local action with global cooperation.”
The Vice President concluded with a heartfelt call for unity and resolve: “May we remain committed in our pursuit of a Ghana that is healthier, safer, and free from the scourge of drug abuse and trafficking.”
The International Day Against Drug Abuse is observed globally on June 26 to raise awareness and promote action against the global drug crisis.
