A weekend jogging routine turned tragic for students of Lawra Senior High School as seven cadet members drowned while attempting to cross the Dikpe River on Saturday.
According to eyewitness Mr. Solomon, about 16 students were jogging near the river when ten of them attempted to cross using a small boat that usually ferries goods from the Burkina Faso side to Ghana. The boat, which typically holds a maximum of six people including the operator, was overloaded with 11 passengers.
Midway through the crossing, the boat was hit by a storm, causing it to sway violently. In panic, some students tried to jump off, leading the boat to capsize. Only three, including the boat operator, managed to swim to safety, while seven others went missing.
Five bodies have since been retrieved and confirmed dead. A search operation is ongoing to locate the remaining two students, believed to be females.
Officials from the Regional Education Directorate, the Lawra Municipal Assembly, and the school headmaster were present at the scene to oversee the recovery efforts.
The community remains in mourning as search teams continue their efforts with hope and determination.
