The Member of Parliament for Ada and Chairperson of the Women's Caucus in Parliament, Hon. Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe, has appealed to the La Nkwantanan Municipal Guards to exercise caution and professionalism in their ongoing efforts to maintain law and order in and around the Madina Market in the Greater Accra Region.
Her call comes on the heels of a working visit by members of Parliament from the Women’s Caucus to the Madina Market. The visit formed part of a broader engagement aimed at educating and sensitizing traders ahead of the upcoming decongestion and street sanity operation spearheaded by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).
Addressing the media after the tour, Hon. Doyoe Cudjoe emphasized the need for a humane and inclusive approach in enforcing the new directives, stressing that while order is important, the livelihoods of market women and traders must be respected.
“We understand the need for discipline and order, but we also believe that it must be carried out with empathy. These are hardworking women and men trying to make ends meet. We must ensure that the actions of the municipal guards do not lead to unnecessary confrontations,” she said.
The MPs engaged with traders, listening to their concerns and educating them on the need to support the decongestion effort. They reiterated that the initiative is not to displace anyone but to promote safety, cleanliness, and better trading conditions within the municipality.
The decongestion and street sanity campaign is part of ongoing measures by city authorities to address congestion, enhance mobility, and improve urban management across the Greater Accra Region.
