The Ghana GoldBod Taskforce has carried out a major crackdown on illegal gold trading, arresting ten chinese nationals in a sting operation in Asankragua, located in the Western Region of Ghana.
The coordinated operation, hailed as a significant breakthrough, resulted in the seizure of 1.3 kilograms of gold estimated at GH¢1.4 million, alongside GH¢1.3 million in cash and a number of casino cards , items authorities believe could be tied to organized crime and money laundering.
According to officials, the suspects were apprehended for their involvement in smuggling gold in direct violation of Ghana’s GoldBod Act 1140, which strictly prohibits foreign nationals from engaging in the local gold trade.
Speaking at a press briefing after the bust, Sammy Gyamfi (Esq.), Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod, reaffirmed the taskforce’s commitment to rooting out illegal activities that undermine the nation's economy and exploit its natural resources.
"Today marks a significant step in our fight against illegal gold trading," Gyamfi stated. "We will not tolerate any individual or group that seeks to undermine our laws and exploit our resources. The GoldBod Taskforce is here to protect our gold from illegal exploitation."
The operation underscores the government’s renewed efforts to clamp down on illegal mining and trading activities that have plagued Ghana's gold industry, threatening both national revenue and the livelihood of local miners.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the network behind the smuggling scheme. Meanwhile, the suspects are expected to face prosecution under the full rigour of Ghanaian law.
The GoldBod Taskforce has pledged to intensify surveillance and enforcement operations across the country, warning that any attempts to bypass Ghana’s mineral trading laws will be met with swift and decisive action.
