The Government of Ghana has declared Friday, 4th July 2025, a public holiday. This follows a directive from President John Dramani Mahama through an Executive Instrument (E.I), in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2021 (Act 601).

Although Republic Day falls on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the day is not designated as a statutory public holiday. However, in recognition of the day’s historical significance in Ghana's democratic journey, the President has approved Friday, July 4, 2025, as a public holiday to allow Ghanaians time to reflect on the nation’s republican status and achievements.

A statement released by the Ministry of the Interior and signed by the sector minister, Hon. Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, noted that the declaration is aimed at providing a long weekend to encourage civic engagement, historical reflection, and national pride.

The Republic Day commemorates the day Ghana officially became a republic on July 1, 1960, after gaining independence from British colonial rule in 1957. It marks a key milestone in the country’s constitutional development and self-governance.

The public is urged to observe the day in a peaceful and respectful manner while reflecting on the principles of democracy, good governance, and patriotism.
