The Ghana Police Service has sounded the alarm over a growing trend of human trafficking targeting Ghanaians, following the rescue of 66 citizens from a trafficking ring in Nigeria linked to the fraudulent QNET network.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Monday, June 30, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, revealed that the victims ,mostly young people were lured under false pretences with promises of football academy recruitment and lucrative employment abroad.
“These scammers use deception, coercion, and deny victims access to travel documents. Such actions are criminal and punishable by law. Anyone found guilty of luring individuals into such schemes will be arrested and prosecuted,” DCOP Donkor said.
The rescue operation was carried out between May 19 and June 27, 2025, through a coordinated effort involving the Ghana Police Service and INTERPOL.
According to the CID, upon arrival in Nigeria, the victims were subjected to inhumane conditions, their movements severely restricted, and their personal documents confiscated, effectively trapping them.
DCOP Donkor urged the public, especially young job seekers, to be vigilant and skeptical of unsolicited offers promising work or educational opportunities abroad. She also called on families and community leaders to help verify such claims and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement.
“Let’s work together to protect our youth from falling prey to these criminal networks,” she emphasized.
The Ghana Police Service continues to investigate and track individuals involved in the trafficking scheme, and has reiterated its commitment to bringing perpetrators to justice.
