A seven-year-old boy has tragically drowned in an abandoned galamsey (illegal mining) pit at Akyem Akrofufu in the Atiwa West District of the Eastern Region.
According to a report by the Abomosu Citizens Group, the pit left uncovered and filled with rainwater had become a hidden danger in the community. The young boy is believed to have accidentally fallen into the water-filled pit while playing near the site.
Residents expressed outrage and sorrow over the incident, calling on authorities to urgently address the growing number of abandoned galamsey pits scattered across the district.
Local leaders and community members are demanding immediate action from the Minerals Commission and relevant government agencies to secure such sites and prevent further loss of life.
