The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has thrown his full support behind the newly instituted National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, a national initiative introduced by President John Dramani Mahama. The Speaker made the declaration during a courtesy call by the Planning Committee, which formally invited Parliament to participate in the maiden edition slated for July 1, 2025, at the Forecourt of the State House.

In his remarks, Speaker Bagbin lauded the President for launching what he described as a "timely and necessary" national event. He noted that the Day of Prayer is not only a moment of spiritual reflection but also a catalyst for collective healing, wisdom-sharing, and renewed unity in Ghana. He emphasized the need for citizens to use the occasion to rise above political and religious divides in pursuit of national development and moral transformation.

โ€œThis should mark a national awakening, a call to renew our spiritual and ethical values,โ€ the Speaker said, encouraging Ghanaians to embrace the day as an opportunity for peace and unity.

Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, Chairman of the Planning Committee, explained that the event, to be held annually on July 1, will serve as a national altar to seek divine guidance and dedicate Ghana to God. He stressed that the gathering will bring together Christians and people of all faiths to pray for national prosperity, healing, and restoration.

The Clerk to Parliament, Mr. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, also welcomed the initiative and recommended its institutionalization beyond political cycles. He urged that the day remain politically neutral and anchored in spiritual devotion for the good of the country.

Both the Majority and Minority Leaders of Parliament echoed their support, highlighting the dayโ€™s potential to promote religious tolerance, national righteousness, and social harmony.

The inaugural celebration on July 1 is expected to draw religious leaders, government officials, civil society actors, and citizens from across the country in a solemn act of national dedication and thanksgiving.
