Ghana is set to take a bold step toward economic transformation as President John Dramani Mahama announces the official rollout of the much-anticipated 24-Hour Economy Initiative, starting July 1, 2025. The groundbreaking policy aims to unlock the country’s full productive potential across all sectors by enabling continuous operations and maximizing value chains.
Speaking at the 2025 Ghana Horticulture Expo, President Mahama described the initiative as a “game-changing strategy” that will provide a comprehensive framework for round-the-clock production, processing, logistics, and export activities—especially within the agricultural and horticultural sectors.
“This policy will ensure that perishable goods such as pineapples, mangoes, tulips, and herbs can move swiftly from our fields to our ports, and directly into the hands of international chefs and buyers,” the President said. “It will significantly reduce post-harvest losses while increasing earnings and competitiveness for Ghanaian farmers and exporters.”
He further revealed that the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Ministry of Agribusiness, and the Ministry of Transport are working closely with key national institutions including the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, and the Ghana Shippers' Council to operationalize the initiative.
“As part of this strategic move, Tema and Takoradi ports will soon be declared 24-hour ports,” he added, signaling Ghana's readiness to meet global trade demands with greater efficiency.
The 24-Hour Economy Policy is expected to drive national productivity, create jobs, and enhance Ghana’s positioning as a reliable hub for agricultural exports and industrial output on the African continent.
The announcement received widespread support from stakeholders present at the Expo, who described the initiative as timely and critical to Ghana’s economic revival and global competitiveness.
