MTN MoMo to Undergo Nationwide Six-Hour Downtime on August 17 for Major System Upgrade
MTN Mobile Money (MoMo), Ghana’s largest mobile financial service provider, has announced a scheduled nationwide service outage on Sunday, August 17, 2025, to carry out a critical system upgrade aimed at enhancing platform performance and security.

MTN Mobile Money (MoMo), Ghana’s largest mobile financial service provider, has announced a scheduled nationwide service outage on Sunday, August 17, 2025, to carry out a critical system upgrade aimed at enhancing platform performance and security.
The six-hour downtime will occur between 12:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., during which all MoMo services including deposits, withdrawals, transfers, and merchant payments will be completely unavailable.
Confirming the planned maintenance, Charles Asamoah Assah, Chief Technology & Service Delivery Officer of Mobile Money Limited, said the upgrade is necessary to improve the reliability and efficiency of MoMo services.
“Please be informed of a planned system upgrade on 17th August 2025, from 12 midnight to 6 a.m. During this period, all Mobile Money services will be unavailable,” he told Citi FM. “This upgrade is to improve our services to you. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding.”
MTN MoMo is used by millions of Ghanaians as a primary financial tool, processing billions of cedis in transactions monthly and playing a central role in financial inclusion nationwide.
The company stated that the upgrade will deliver faster transaction processing, improved customer experience, enhanced fraud prevention measures, and prepare the system for future digital innovations.
Customers have been assured that all funds will remain safe during the maintenance period, and services will resume immediately after the upgrade is completed.
MTN is advising users and businesses to complete any urgent or planned transactions ahead of the scheduled downtime to avoid disruption.
The company says it remains committed to delivering secure, efficient, and customer-friendly mobile financial services across Ghana.
