In a dramatic turn of events on the floor of Parliament, the Minister for Communications, Hon. Sam George, announced the immediate lifting of the suspension imposed on 64 radio stations by the National Communications Authority (NCA), following a directive from President John Dramani Mahama.
The suspended stations, which were cited for various regulatory breaches, had faced temporary shutdowns as part of the NCA's efforts to enforce broadcasting standards. The list of affected media houses was made public during the parliamentary session, drawing nationwide attention and concern over press freedom and regulatory enforcement.
However, in a swift intervention aimed at promoting dialogue and media stability, President Mahama directed the NCA to grant a 30-day grace period to the affected broadcasters. This clemency, the President noted, is intended to give the stations ample time to rectify all outstanding issues with the regulator.
“The President believes in media plurality and responsible journalism. While the NCA’s enforcement of regulations is important, the government is committed to ensuring that no voice is unduly silenced,” Hon. Sam George stated during the session.
The 64 FM stations have now been given until the end of the grace period to address their infractions or risk facing re-suspension and possible revocation of licenses.
The NCA, meanwhile, has reiterated its commitment to supporting media houses to meet the necessary legal and technical requirements, urging all operators to engage proactively to avoid future sanctions.
This latest development has sparked reactions across the country, with media advocacy groups applauding the President’s intervention while calling on all stakeholders to prioritize regulatory compliance and constructive engagement moving forward.
