President John Dramani Mahama has received the outgoing British High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E. Harriet Thompson, at the Jubilee House as she ends her four-year diplomatic tenure in the country. The farewell meeting highlighted the strong and enduring partnership between Ghana and the United Kingdom, with discussions centering on ongoing cooperation, future priorities, and key achievements.

During the meeting, President Mahama emphasized the importance of deepening economic ties and trade relations between the two nations, particularly in light of the rapidly evolving global landscape.

"There's a mutual need for deeper economic partnerships and trade between our nations," the President noted, reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to expanding bilateral economic engagement.

Security cooperation was also a focal point of the discussions. President Mahama expressed appreciation for the UK’s continued support in Ghana’s counter-terrorism efforts, particularly in intelligence sharing and capacity building.

“We appreciate the partnership we have shared in the fight against terrorism and will continue to rely on the UK for help and cooperation in intelligence gathering and training to prepare ourselves in the event of any attack,” he stated.

The President also took the opportunity to update the High Commissioner on Ghana’s improving economic performance. According to him, the country is seeing steady progress, with GDP growth hitting 5.3% in the first quarter of the year. Inflation, he noted, has dropped from 23% in January to 18%, with a target of 13% by year-end. He added that the Ghana Cedi is showing signs of strengthening, and investor confidence is on the rise.

“These positive trends reflect our commitment to fiscal discipline and should bring some relief to Ghanaians,” President Mahama said.

President Mahama commended High Commissioner Harriet Thompson for her role in strengthening the historic ties between Ghana and the UK, noting her active and constructive engagement throughout her tenure. He wished her well in her future endeavours.

H.E. Harriet Thompson departs Ghana after a tenure marked by strengthened diplomatic relations and notable cooperation in security, governance, and economic development.
