Hon. Rev. Ntim Fordjour has made a passionate appeal to the government to urgently procure and install narcotic scanners at the country’s ports, warning that the lack of functional equipment is leaving Ghana vulnerable to drug trafficking.
Speaking on the growing concerns about illegal drug smuggling, the lawmaker emphasized that many of the current scanning devices at key entry points, including airports, are either outdated or completely out of service. This, he said, has created a dangerous gap in national security efforts.
“Our officers are doing their best, but they’re handicapped. Without the right tools, especially modern narcotic scanners, it becomes difficult to intercept smuggled drugs. We cannot afford to be exposed like this,” Rev. Fordjour said.
He further urged the government to explore every possible avenue to secure funding both domestic and international to procure the necessary equipment, insisting that such an investment is critical to safeguarding the nation’s borders and international reputation.
The call comes amid growing reports of drug-related arrests and seizures at major ports, raising alarms about the effectiveness of current surveillance systems.
Stakeholders in the security and port management sectors have welcomed Rev. Fordjour’s call, echoing the need for immediate action to fortify Ghana’s frontiers against the drug trade.
