The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has issued an urgent appeal to the National Security Secretariat, calling for the immediate deployment of Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) personnel to identified accident-prone areas, popularly referred to as blackspots.
In a letter dated June 11, 2025, addressed to the National Security Coordinator, the Acting Director-General of the NRSA, Abraham Amaliba, expressed grave concern over the increasing rate of road crashes, injuries, and fatalities. He attributed the alarming trend in part to the notable absence of MTTD officers on major roads.
The call comes on the heels of a recent stakeholder meeting where participants unanimously highlighted the lack of visible police enforcement on roads as a key contributor to growing incidents of traffic violations, particularly overspeeding.
“Visible policing on high-risk corridors will significantly reduce speeding and other dangerous driving behaviours that contribute to fatalities,” the NRSA emphasized in its letter.
The Authority urged the National Security Secretariat to consider the request as a vital interim measure ahead of the full rollout of the TraffiTechGh system, a technology-based enforcement initiative.
The NRSA concluded by stressing that road safety is a shared responsibility and called for swift and collective action to prevent further loss of lives.
