NCA Cites Wontumi Multimedia for Regulatory Breaches at Accra FM Station

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has flagged Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited for multiple regulatory breaches following inspections at the company’s FM broadcasting facility located in Kokomlemle, Accra.

In two separate letters dated 21st December 2022 and 22nd February 2023, the NCA outlined critical violations of the conditions under which Wontumi Multimedia was granted authorisation to operate an FM station in Accra.

According to the NCA, the station’s transmission system was installed at Accra Newtown rather than the approved location of Ajangote, or within a 5-kilometre radius of it, as mandated by Condition 3 of the company’s broadcasting authorisation dated 26th October 2021. This deviation is reportedly causing interference with neighbouring frequencies.

Further investigations revealed the absence of a valid Fire Certificate from the Ghana National Fire Service, as well as the lack of a permit from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the erection of the station’s mast.

In response, the NCA has directed Wontumi Multimedia to address all identified infractions within 90 days from the date of each letter. The authority has also made it clear that the cost of a second inspection ,GH¢2,000.00 will be borne by the company.

The NCA emphasised that until full compliance is achieved, the issuance of a Test Transmission Authorisation for the station to operate in Accra remains pending.

The authority has copied the Zonal Manager for Greater Accra and Central Regions in its communications and reaffirmed its commitment to strict enforcement of broadcasting regulations to ensure orderly use of Ghana’s airwaves.
