Ghanaian Chef Big Mo of Osu RE Grill Dies in New York; Candlelight Vigil Set for July 6

The Ghanaian community in the United States and beyond is in mourning following the sudden death of Chef Big Mo, the beloved owner of Osu RE Grill, a popular Ghanaian-Caribbean restaurant located in the Bronx, New York.

News of his passing was confirmed on Instagram by Ghanaian musician Prince Bright of Buk Bak fame and blogger Phylx Entertainment, both of whom expressed their sorrow and paid glowing tributes to the renowned chef. Known not only for his mouthwatering grills but also for his generous spirit and infectious charisma, Chef Big Mo had become a central figure within the Ghanaian diaspora in New York.

Located at 1344 E Gunhill Road in the Bronx, Osu RE Grill was more than just a restaurant , it was a cultural hub. It attracted a wide range of patrons, including celebrities, Ghanaian businesspeople, and families looking for a taste of home in a foreign land.

While details surrounding his death remain unclear, Prince Bright announced that a candlelight vigil will be held in his memory at the restaurant on Sunday, July 6, 2025, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Tributes have poured in from across the Ghanaian community in the U.S. and Ghana, as many remember Chef Big Mo as a dedicated entrepreneur who proudly represented Ghanaian cuisine and culture abroad.

Funeral arrangements and additional memorial activities are expected to be announced in the coming days.
