In the serene coastal town of Big Fetteh, a meaningful dialogue unfolded over the weekend between a respected traditional leader and a rising political figure, signaling a renewed commitment to youth empowerment and sustainable fishing practices.

During a community cleanup exercise at the Big Fetteh landing beach, Chief Fisherman Nana Obrenu Dabum III hosted Dr. Emmanuel Appoh Mensah, a progressive political leader known for his dedication to grassroots development. The meeting, set against the rhythmic backdrop of crashing waves and fishing boats, became a platform for candid conversations about the future of the town’s fishing industry.

Chief Nana Obrenu Dabum III, a revered figure within the local fishing community, spoke passionately about the pressing challenges faced by fishermen from overfishing and climate change to pollution. “The sea is our lifeblood,” he told Dr. Appoh mensah. “If we do not act now, future generations may lose this vital resource.”

Central to the Chief Fisherman’s concerns was the growing exodus of young people from the town in search of urban opportunities. He emphasized the need to make fishing an attractive and viable path for the youth, by investing in modern training, tools, and market access. “Our young people bring energy and innovation, but they need support,” he stressed.

Dr. Appoh Mensah, visibly moved by the discussion, pledged to champion policies that promote youth engagement and sustainability in the fishing sector. “I understand the importance of your concerns,” he said. “I am committed to working with leaders like you to ensure the fishing industry not only survives but thrives through the next generation.”

The dialogue concluded with a shared vision of a rejuvenated fishing community led by empowered youth and supported by strong partnerships between traditional authorities and political stakeholders.

As the sun set over the horizon, the exchange between Nana Obrenu Dabum III and Dr. Appomensah offered hope  a symbol of collaboration that could help preserve Big Fetteh’s cherished fishing heritage while preparing it for a sustainable future.
