Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, cruised into the quarterfinals of the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a commanding 4-1 victory over Tanzania on Monday at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
The crucial Group B fixture saw the Queens showcase their attacking prowess, especially in the second half, as they sealed progression to the knockout stage with a game to spare.
Ghana took the lead in the 12th minute through striker Princella Adubea, who latched onto a misplaced Tanzanian pass and slotted home with confidence.
However, Tanzania responded just before halftime, with Stumai Athumani finishing off a well-worked team move in the 41st minute to level the score.
The Black Queens emerged from the break with renewed energy and quickly regained control. Midfielder Alice Kusi converted from the spot in the 63rd minute after a foul in the Tanzanian box to make it 2-1.
Substitute Evelyn Badu
extended Ghana’s lead in the 87th minute, reacting quickest to a rebound in the penalty area. Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah put the game beyond doubt with a curling effort in stoppage time, sealing a 4-1 win.
Boye-Hlorkah, who was named Woman of the Match, was instrumental throughout the game, providing width, creativity, and the final flourish to Ghana’s attacking play.
The result puts Ghana at the top of Group B, with one game remaining against Morocco. A win or draw in that fixture will confirm the Black Queens as group leaders, setting up a potentially favorable quarterfinal clash.
Ghana are chasing their first WAFCON title, having reached the finals three times in the past. Their dominant performance against Tanzania has reignited hopes of finally lifting the continental trophy.
