Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has issued a strong call for national unity and political tolerance, warning that violence in pursuit of power leads only to destruction and undermines Ghana’s democratic gains.
Speaking during a meeting with the planning committee for the upcoming National Day of Prayer, led by former Minister Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, Bagbin emphasized that political power is fleeting, but the damage caused by division and violence can have lasting effects.
"Power is temporary, but the effects of political violence are often permanent. We must learn to resolve our differences peacefully," the Speaker stated.
He praised Ghana’s reputation as one of Africa’s most stable democracies and said this peaceful track record must be preserved through dialogue, cooperation, and mutual respect across political lines.
The July 1 National Day of Prayer, which is expected to bring together leaders from various religious and political backgrounds, was warmly endorsed by Bagbin. He described the initiative as timely and necessary, especially as the country approaches the December 2024 general elections.
"When Parliament is united, Ghana is united," he declared, adding that Parliament must set the tone for national cohesion by rising above partisan divisions.
The interfaith prayer event is expected to feature Christian, Muslim, and traditional leaders, all coming together to seek divine guidance and peace for the nation.
Bagbin's remarks add to growing calls for civility and unity in Ghana’s political discourse, as tensions begin to build ahead of what is expected to be a closely contested national election.
