The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Hon. Sam Nartey George, has defended the recent directive mandating a 15% increase in data volume for consumers, describing it as a crucial step toward making internet access more affordable for Ghanaians.

Speaking at a media engagement, the minister acknowledged that some individuals have described the measure as “unsatisfactory” in addressing the broader issue of rising data costs. However, he insisted that the policy offers a practical and immediate solution that benefits consumers nationwide.

“This is not just a temporary fix—it’s a strategic intervention aimed at easing the burden of high data prices. By increasing the volume at the same cost, we’re ensuring that users get better value for their money,” Hon. George stated.

He further explained that the directive is part of a broader digital transformation agenda that prioritizes inclusivity and accessibility, particularly for youth, entrepreneurs, and students who depend heavily on mobile data for education and work.

The government, he noted, remains committed to collaborating with telecom providers to explore further reforms that will lead to sustainable reductions in data tariffs and improved service delivery across the country.
