WAHO and ANSSP Partner to Boost Benin’s Response to Monkeypox Outbreak

The National Primary Health Care Agency (ANSSP) of Benin has received a major boost in its fight against the ongoing monkeypox (MPOX) outbreak, thanks to a fresh delivery of epidemic response supplies provided with financial backing from the West African Health Organisation (WAHO).

The consignment — delivered on 7 October 2025 by the Beninese Company for Health Product Supply (SOBAPS) — is expected to significantly enhance the country’s capacity to prevent and manage infectious disease threats.

A brief handover ceremony was held in the presence of key stakeholders, including the ECOWAS Resident Representative in Benin, who also chairs the national Steering Committee overseeing WAHO’s financial support. Officials from WAHO, including the organisation’s Focal Point and Financial Manager, were also in attendance.

The initiative reflects WAHO and ECOWAS’ ongoing commitment to strengthening Member States’ public health resilience through targeted support and regional solidarity. Authorities say the newly acquired supplies will be deployed immediately to reinforce frontline response teams across affected areas.

Monkeypox, a re-emerging viral disease, has posed growing challenges in several West African countries, prompting intensified surveillance and cross-border collaboration.

Health officials reaffirmed that the joint action between ANSSP and WAHO marks not just a reinforcement of logistics, but a renewed pledge to safeguard public health through preparedness and partnership.
