Tensions flared during the parliamentary election rerun in the Ablekuma North Constituency as the Deputy National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, was violently assaulted by a group of unidentified thugs at the Odorkor Methodist 1 Polling Station.
The attack occurred in the midst of voting in 19 selected polling stations, which are part of a critical rerun to determine the winner of a closely contested parliamentary seat. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the attackers arrived in a pickup vehicle and stormed the polling station, despite the presence of police officers on site.
Chris Asamoah was reportedly among several individuals targeted during the incident. In a related and equally disturbing development, former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, was also beaten by the same group of assailants. She sustained serious injuries and, according to party officials, is currently receiving medical attention.
The violence has sparked widespread concern, particularly given the heightened political stakes in the rerun. The NPP’s Nana Akua Owusu Afriyieh and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Ewurabena Aubynn are neck-and-neck in the vote count, with only 48 votes separating them prior to the rerun.
Background of the Rerun
The rerun was necessitated after an impasse during the December 2024 general elections. The Electoral Commission reported that chaos at the collation centre resulted in the destruction of an unspecified number of original result forms (Pink Sheets). To proceed, the EC relied on 37 scanned copies of Pink Sheets provided by the NPP.
While the NPP maintained that the scanned forms had been verified by NDC agents, the NDC disputed their validity and demanded a complete rerun in the affected polling stations.
The latest incidents of violence have reignited concerns about the credibility and security of the electoral process. Party officials, civil society actors, and observers have called on the police and Electoral Commission to act swiftly to protect voters and election officials, and to bring perpetrators of the attacks to justice.
Voting continues under tense conditions, with the final results expected to break a seven-month parliamentary stalemate in the Ablekuma North constituency.
