Ghana is positioning itself as a strategic trade and investment hub as the Ghana Free Zones Authority took center stage at the 4th China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo, held on 13th June 2025 in Changsha.
Dr. Hon. Mary Awusi, CEO of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, led Ghana’s delegation at the prestigious Quality Foreign Trade Matchmaking Side Event, where she promoted Ghana’s Free Zones Programme as a unique gateway for Chinese investors to access regional and global markets.
Organized by the Trade Development Bureau of the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, in collaboration with the Hunan GBA Economic & Trade Exchange Promotion Association and the Sand-Stone Association, the high-level event created a powerful platform for African and Chinese business leaders to explore trade opportunities, exchange ideas, and establish long-term partnerships.
In a passionate presentation, Dr. Awusi highlighted Ghana’s competitive incentives for export-oriented businesses, emphasizing tax breaks, duty-free imports of raw materials, and streamlined investment procedures under the Free Zones regime. “Our programme offers Chinese companies an exceptional opportunity to produce in Ghana and tap into regional and international markets,” she stated.
A key highlight of the event was an announcement by Mr. Deng Weiping, Deputy Director General of Hunan’s Commerce Department. Mr. Deng revealed China’s new trade policy allowing duty-free imports from Ghana, a significant boost for Ghanaian exports and Free Zones enterprises.
Reflecting on the event, Dr. Awusi called the forum “a timely opportunity to position Ghana as a competitive trade and investment hub,” one that can leverage strong partnerships with Chinese investors to achieve sustainable economic growth.
With Africa and China strengthening their commercial ties, the Free Zones Authority aims to leverage these engagements to drive long-term industrialization and value addition. Dr. Awusi ended by extending a warm invitation to Chinese companies to explore Ghana’s dynamic business environment and unlock the numerous opportunities available under the Free Zones Programme.
