The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has issued an urgent call for government intervention to retool the Service, warning that without immediate support, it could face a complete shutdown within two years due to outdated and failing equipment.
Addressing Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, the Director of Finance, DCFO Mark Brako-Appiah Jnr, revealed that many of the Service’s fire tenders and turntable ladders have been in use for over 22 years, rendering them obsolete and unreliable for modern firefighting operations.
Brako-Appiah appealed for swift government action to help modernize the Service’s fleet and equipment, stressing that retooling is critical to restoring operational readiness and safeguarding public safety.
The GNFS’s appeal has intensified discussions around emergency service funding and the urgent need to strengthen national disaster response systems.
