The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has expressed deep concern over the quality and quantity of food being supplied to Senior High Schools (SHSs) across the country, describing the situation as “woefully inadequate and insufficient.”

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, the Minister revealed that his comments were based on a detailed report he received from the President, which highlighted troubling developments in the implementation of the school feeding component of the Free SHS policy.

“The welfare of our students cannot be compromised. The current standard of food being provided in our Senior High Schools is far below expectation ,both in quality and quantity. This is unacceptable,” Hon. Iddrisu said.

In response, the Minister has directed the Internal Auditor General of the Ministry of Education to immediately embark on a nationwide tour to assess the food situation in various second-cycle institutions. The audit aims to provide accurate and on-the-ground insights into the challenges schools are facing and to recommend appropriate interventions.

“We need to get to the bottom of this. It is imperative that the internal auditor visits these schools, talks to headmasters and students, and compiles a comprehensive report,” he added.

The directive is expected to trigger a major review of the supply chain processes and accountability mechanisms associated with the feeding program. Stakeholders in the education sector and parents alike have welcomed the move, describing it as timely and necessary.

The Ministry of Education has promised to take swift action once the audit is complete, ensuring that students receive the nutrition they need to thrive both academically and physically.
