The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has unveiled a ₦56 million Humanitarian–Development–Peace (HDP) Initiative to support women and children affected by armed conflict in Plateau State, Nigeria.
Focused on communities including Mangu, Bokkos, Barkin Ladi, Riyom, and Bassa, the initiative aims to foster recovery, peace, and resilience among survivors of violent conflicts.
A two-day workshop marking the launch was held in Jos from 29–30 September 2025. It was organised by the ECOWAS Department of Humanitarian Development and Social Affairs in collaboration with GIZ and the Plateau State Peace Building Agency (PPBA), with support from the European Union and the Plateau State Government.
Key components of the programme include psychosocial support for children, the creation of a Plateau-specific HDP Coordination Mechanism, and stronger partnerships among humanitarian, development, and peacebuilding actors.
The initiative also adopts a gender-sensitive approach, prioritising women and children while tackling the root causes of conflict and displacement across affected communities.
