A groundbreaking disability advocacy initiative was launched in Gomoa East as part of this year’s UN International Day of Hope celebration, marking a significant milestone in the fight for disability rights and mental health inclusion in Ghana.
The event, held at the Gomoa East District Assembly, brought together civil society organizations, traditional leaders, international partners, and government officials. It was spearheaded by the African Disability Policy Advocates (ADPA) in collaboration with the Gomoa East Municipal Assembly.
Dr. Emmanuel Appoh Mensah commended the leadership of the District Chief Executive, Hon. Margareth Naana Ackom, for her unwavering commitment to ensuring that disability-related issues remain central to the district’s development agenda.
“Her tireless efforts in prioritizing the needs and rights of persons with disabilities continue to set an example for other districts,” Dr. Appoh Mensah stated. He also expressed appreciation to representatives of the UN-ADPA, civil servants, advocates, and all stakeholders whose dedication fuels positive change in the disability space.
Describing the launch as a "hopeful and transformative step," Dr. Appoh Mensah reaffirmed his personal and professional commitment to promoting policies that champion equity, mental health support, and social justice.
“The voices, dignity, and rights of persons with disabilities must not only be recognized but fully embraced,” he emphasized.
The event, themed “Break the Silence: Centering Dignity, Rights, and Inclusion in Mental Health,” highlighted the urgent need to dismantle stigma and build inclusive systems across all sectors.
“Let this day remind us all that hope begins with inclusion,” Dr. Appoh Mensah concluded. “Together, we can break the silence surrounding mental health and disability.”
The initiative is expected to roll out targeted programs and engagements aimed at empowering persons with disabilities and integrating mental health into community-level development planning.
