Former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has strongly condemned violent attacks on members of the NPP during the Ablekuma North constituency election rerun, describing the incidents as a threat to Ghana’s democratic integrity.
In a series of widely circulated videos, thugs believed to be affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were seen physically assaulting prominent NPP figures, including former Awutu Senya East MP, Hawa Koomson, and the Deputy National Organiser of the NPP, Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah. Koomson was reportedly attacked by a group of over a dozen individuals at the St. Peters Polling Station, while Asamoah suffered a similar fate at the Odorkor Methodist 1 Polling Station.
Reacting to the disturbing scenes, Dr. Bawumia described the incidents as “appalling” and an “affront to our democracy,” calling on President John Mahama to rein in NDC supporters allegedly responsible for the chaos.
“This is not the democracy that we want to see in Ghana,” Dr. Bawumia stated. “Our supporters are being attacked by thugs in the presence of the police, who have been unable to protect them. Candidate Akua Afriyie has been attacked, Hawa Koomson has been attacked, our Deputy National Organiser has been attacked and many more.”
The NPP flagbearer further criticized the apparent inconsistency in police security, noting that while officers failed to protect the collation of three pink sheets, they were present during voting in 19 polling stations but still failed to prevent the violence.
He warned against the dangerous precedent of political parties resorting to self-defense due to lack of state protection, saying, “If every political party has to raise its own army to give them protection during an election, it will be a recipe for disaster.”
Dr. Bawumia emphasized that those behind the attacks were captured on video and urged swift action from the presidency to prevent further escalation.
“These actions must not go unpunished. I call on the President to take immediate action,” he stressed.
The incidents have sparked widespread condemnation, raising concerns about security and political tolerance ahead of the December 2024 general elections.
