Parliament and the nation continue to mourn the untimely passing of Akwatia Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, as tributes pour in from all corners of the political divide. One of the most emotional reactions came from Hon. Charles Asuako Owiredu, MP for Abirem Constituency, who broke down in tears during a live interview on Adom TV while speaking about his late colleague and friend.

In the interview, Hon. Owiredu struggled to hold back his emotions as he recounted the moment he first learned of Ernest Kumi’s death. He revealed that he initially saw the announcement on the official social media page of the Minority in Parliament but dismissed it, thinking it was false.

“I saw the post on the Minority page and didn’t want to believe it,” he said, his voice cracking with emotion. “I kept telling myself it wasn’t true. Ernest was full of life. This is a devastating loss.”

Describing Ernest Kumi as a humble, hardworking, and promising young leader, Owiredu said the news was not only painful but also deeply personal.

“Ernest was more than a colleague, he was like a brother. He inspired many of us with his calm nature and dedication to his constituents. Ghana has truly lost a patriot,” he added through tears.

Ernest Kumi, 40, represented the Akwatia Constituency in the Eastern Region and was a rising star within the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He secured the seat in the 2024 general elections with a commanding lead and was widely seen as one of the party’s most promising young lawmakers.

His sudden passing on July 7, 2025, has sent shockwaves through the political community. Lawmakers, party executives, and constituents have all expressed their grief, describing his death as a major loss to Parliament and the nation.

A book of condolence is expected to be opened in Parliament, while preparations are underway for his funeral and final rites.
