The Consul General of the United States Embassy in Ghana, Elliot Fertik, has cautioned prospective student visa applicants about the potential risks of keeping their social media accounts private during the visa application process.
Speaking at a recent forum, Fertik revealed that as part of enhanced vetting measures, the embassy closely examines the social media activity of all student visa applicants. According to him, maintaining a private profile could raise red flags or be seen as a misstep that complicates the assessment process.
“We are engaging in enhanced vetting of social media accounts for all student visa applicants. Having a private account may already be a misstep,” Fertik stated.
Applicants are now being advised to review their social media presence carefully as they prepare for their interviews.
