The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has filed an appeal against a High Court ruling that acquitted Alexander Kwabena Sarfo-Kantanka, the former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) nominee for Juaben, of bribery charges.
Sarfo-Kantanka, who was nominated by President Akufo-Addo, had been accused of offering bribes to assembly members to secure approval for his nomination. The case drew national attention, particularly after a video allegedly showing him distributing money went viral. However, the High Court ruled that the evidence presented, including the video footage, was insufficient to prove beyond reasonable doubt that he committed the offence.
In its appeal, the OSP argues that the ruling was inconsistent with the weight of evidence and that the trial judge erred on critical legal and factual matters. The OSP maintains that justice was not served and is determined to have the decision overturned at the appellate level.
The outcome of the appeal is expected to have significant implications for Ghana’s fight against corruption, especially in cases involving high-profile political figures.
