In a bold move to address the high cost of mobile data in Ghana, the Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Hon. Sam Nartey George, has announced significant reforms aimed at improving affordability and service quality across the telecommunications sector.

Speaking on the progress of his earlier promise made during his vetting, the Minister emphasized that his commitment to ensuring change in data pricing before the end of the year is being fulfilled.

"Today, working with the National Communications Authority Ghana, MTN Ghana, AT Ghana, and Telecel Ghana, we have made bold strides in improving value for Ghanaians," he stated. "We remain focused to drive the best Quality of Service for our citizens."

Effective Tuesday, July 1, 2025, all three major telecommunications networks, MTN Ghana, AT Ghana (formerly AirtelTigo), and Telecel Ghana will implement sweeping adjustments to their data pricing models:

MTN Ghana will offer a 15% increase in all data bundles, including the restoration of its GH¢399 bundle from 188GB to 214GB.

AT Ghana will implement a 10% increase across all data bundles, with its GH¢400 bundle increasing from 195GB to 236GB.

Telecel Ghana will significantly improve its GH¢400 bundle from 90GB to 250GB.

Additionally, Hon. Sam George has issued a directive for the reversal of a recent price hike by Telecel Ghana on its Fixed Broadband service, following widespread consumer backlash.

Despite public pressure for more aggressive intervention, the Minister reiterated the limits of his authority under Ghana's free market economy. “My mandate as minister in a free market economy does not extend to interfering in pricing decisions made by private investors,” he said. “Any such policies must be implemented in consultation with the necessary stakeholders.”

He, however, stressed that "in this day and age, our focus is on reduction," underscoring his commitment to pushing for policies that make digital access more affordable and equitable for Ghanaians.

The latest interventions mark a significant victory for consumers and reflect a new chapter in public-private collaboration to bridge Ghana’s digital divide.
